Only yesterday did I sign up for the free Legal Week online conference today on Strategic Technology for law firms, but I am very glad I did.

From the comfort of my home office, I was able to listen to eight different presentations from a variety of speakers from around the globe – Washington, Chicago, Houston, Cayman Islands and London, seamlessly liked together by Chairman, Chris Bull, COO of Osborne Clarke. There was no video, only voice and moving PowerPoint, but it was like listening to your favourite radio station, when no pictures are needed, only your senses and your imagination.

I have to say Chris Bull was a fantastic link man.  His biography did not hint at a previous career as a chat show host, but I would not have been surprised if it had.  He exuded style throughout and time passed quickly from the beginning at 10:10 to a close at 16:45.  The schedule seemed to work like clockwork throughout and I experienced no technical hitches, apart from one presentation when the timing of latest slide was slightly delayed on a few occasions, but this did not detract from the presentation.

Throughout each presentation, I was able to surf off to the websites of the speaker’s firms and generally read this and that (and deal with some email along the way), as I listened in to what was being said and tried to develop further what they were saying in my mind.  I was determined to do my little bit to submit at least one question per presentation to make the event a success, and it was gratifying and uplifting to hear the Chairman take my questions throughout the day, sometimes adding his own contextual comments, and feeding them in to the relevant speaker.

Broadband is now becoming so integral to our lives that these kinds of events are only going to increase.  I shall look forward to the next event in the series.
